The annual ceremony of the Souvenir Day took place at Choeung eka former “field of death” near Phnom Penhwhere thousands of people were executed during the regime which raged from 1975 to 1979.
About 2,000 people, including Buddhist monks, gathered to watch students actors from a local art school, reconstruct scenes of torture and executions. Dressed in black uniforms formerly carried by the Khmer Rouge, the students represented the horrors suffered by the victims.
The event ended with a symbolic reconstruction of the fall of the regime, when the Vietnamese forces ended one of the darkest chapters in the country during the 20th century.
