Oregon Zoo unveiled the first touching images of its newborn baby, a little elephant born on Saturday February 1. Standing on her legs only 15 minutes after her birth, she weighs approximately 90 kilos and seems healthy.
According to Steve Lefave, head of the Portland Zoo Elephants program, birth was remarkably fluid, Rose you helping to get up and take your first steps quickly.
Caregivers, keeping their distances to promote the first links between mother and baby, are optimistic about the future. The little elephant already sucks well and benefits from the protective attention of Rose-Tu.
Classified in critical danger of extinction, Asian elephants are today threatened by the loss of their habitat and conflicts with humans. The Oregon Zoo, recognized worldwide for its expertise, continues its efforts for their preservation.
