Video. Black Sea: Efforts to contain Russian tanker oil spill continue

The rescuers and operational staff completed the construction of a technical structure around the stranded Volganeft-239 tanker on Friday.

“The road around the ship will provide access to it, will become a reliable barrier against the possible spread of petroleum products in the sea and will allow the pumping of fuel oil,” assured the operational staff.

Work to eliminate the oil spill continues in the Kerch Strait, Krasnodar Territory, Crimea and Sevastopol. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 167,282 tons of contaminated sand and soil were collected, 127,282 tons were removed. Rescuers monitor more than 910 kilometers of the Black Sea coast.

On December 15, two Russian “Volgoneft” tankers carrying petroleum products sank in the Kerch Strait. One of the ships broke in two.

The sailors were evacuated, but one died of hypothermia. Experts from the Russian Academy of Sciences estimate that about 1,500 tons of fuel oil leaked from each tanker.
