Video. Attend the rebirth of Gustave Courbet’s greatest work at the Musée d’Orsay

At the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the monumental work of Gustave Courbet, “a burial in Ornans”, is the subject of a complete restoration under the vigilant eye of the public.

The largest work of Courbet by its size, it is also by its impact, embodying in 1850 an artistic and social revolution.

Ten years after restoring “the painter’s workshop” in similar conditions, the museum reiterates the immersive experience.

It is behind a window that a team of seven restaurateurs meticulously cleanses the old varnish, studies the seams of the support and strives to rekindle the original tones of the table.

Scheduled to be finished in mid-2010, the project allows art lovers to return, observe changes and appreciate the rare dialogue between the work, those who repair it and those who contemplate it.

Commented visits to the catering site will be offered for free to the public from June 5, 2025 every Thursday morning, at 9:45 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. The reservation is compulsory.
