Protesters gathered in front of the residence of Argentine President Javier Milei on Tuesday. Their demands for increased state aid come on the eve of a strike launched by unions and political forces against the government’s economic reforms.
Thousands, undoubtedly tens of thousands of demonstrators are expected in the heart of Buenos Aires this Wednesday for a rally at the initiative of the CGT union, which claims 7 million members. This Peronist center (close to the previous government) was joined by other unions, radical left movements and various social organizations.
This Tuesday, the people gathered are demanding more food, materials and infrastructure for the soup kitchens they manage in disadvantaged neighborhoods. They say the number of people they feed has increased significantly.
The new Argentine president is trying to implement his program to drastically reduce the fiscal deficit with a series of austerity measures which put unions, left-wing parties and popular organizations on a war footing.
Somos Barrios de Pie – a movement aligned with opposition Peronism – and other social organizations argue that more and more people are suffering from “food emergency situation” due to skyrocketing food prices and lack of formal employment.
