A fire devastated the Booysens district made up of makeshift shelters in Johannesburg in South Africa on Monday, leaving hundreds of homeless people and destroying around 1,500 precarious dwellings.

Many huts, built with flammable materials, were quickly burned.

Residents reported that the fire started when an oil pan has exploded.

Some were able to recover their goods, but most have lost everything.

The firefighters, helped by local residents, mastered the fire, but the help efforts continue to help the displaced families.
