The event started with the “SIK PIU” parade, featuring children disguised as folk heroes and deities, raised on hidden platforms while they were transported in the streets.
The festival dates back more than a century and was created in local response to a deadly plague. The inhabitants offered buns, white breads cooked with steam, to the deities in a Taoist ritual aimed at chasing illness and bad luck.
The festival ends with a bun climbing race at midnight, where participants climb a tower to collect the buns with the top score.
