The Qatari Ministry of Environment and Climate Change launched a set of awareness activities on the occasion of the International Environment Day, which falls on the fifth of June of each year, under the slogan: “Reducing pollution with plastic materials”, which has become a serious environmental and climatic problem.
The Ministry stated – in a statement on Monday – that the activities aim to enhance environmental awareness of the various segments of society, and highlight the risks of plastic pollution and its negative effects on land and sea environmental systems, through educational and interactive activities that combine entertainment and information.
These activities – which are organized in the Qatar Mall complex, from 1 to 3 June – include a number of awareness pillars, including the “land corner” that displays the effects of plastic pollution on the wild environment, and the “sea corner” that highlights the harmful effects of plastic on marine life.
The “Knowledge Garden” has also been allocated to provide accurate scientific information about the types of plastic and its health and environmental effects, in addition to the “photography corner” that allows visitors an interactive experience to encourage positive environmental behaviors.
In the context of integrating art with awareness, students from the Department of Art Education at Qatar University participate in displaying artistic paintings that embody the effects of plastic pollution, under the supervision of academic, in an initiative aimed at communicating the environmental message through artistic creativity.
The event also includes an awareness play entitled “Our Environment Beautiful” is shown 3 times a day during the first and second days, and it targets children and families in a simple and attractive manner to transfer important environmental messages.
In this context, the Director of the Public Relations and Communication Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Farhoud Al -Hajri, stressed that the activities come within the Ministry’s strategy to raise environmental awareness in society, noting the importance of involving all groups in environmental protection efforts and reducing the use of plastic materials with a single use.
Within its interest in climate work, enhancing environmental awareness, biological diversity and sustainability, the State of Qatar also celebrates the Qatari Environment Day on February 26 of each year.
Doha works to formulate and implement various environmental work strategies and work plans, establish many environmental projects and initiatives to protect and diversify its resources and maintain and mitigate the effects of climate change, within a strategic vision based on harmonization between economic growth and environmental sustainability.
In this context, the State of Qatar signed a number of international agreements in the field of environment and climate, and issued a number of laws and legislations that support environmental policies and trends, which enabled it to achieve great steps in the field of environmental and climate commitment, support international organizations and active participation in international conferences on the environment and climate.
