The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said that one million and 900 thousand residents of the Gaza Strip have been displaced from their homes since October 7, 2023, while the European Union’s foreign policy official, Josep Borrell, confirmed that all residents of the Gaza Strip suffer from a lack of… Food security, and hundreds of thousands of them have become homeless.
UNRWA explained, in a report issued today, Monday, that only 5 health centers out of its 22 health centers are still operating in the central and southern regions of the Strip.
The UN agency said that the aforementioned number of displaced people represents 85% of the population of the Gaza Strip, and that some families were forced to be displaced several times and constantly move in search of safety.
It also reported that about 1.4 million displaced people reside in 155 UNRWA facilities in all five governorates of the Strip, according to the latest census conducted by the agency on January 2, and that 160,000 of them are in the north of the Strip and Gaza City. It said that about 500,000 displaced people live near its facilities and benefit from its assistance.
A difficult situation
For his part, the European Union foreign policy official said, after a discussion session with the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, that 85% of the population of Gaza were displaced from their areas, and pointed out that all residents of the Strip suffer from food insecurity, and that hundreds of thousands of them are homeless.
Borrell stressed – in a tweet on the “X” website – the necessity of preserving UNRWA and continuing to support it as a major provider of services to the Palestinians.
Scott Anderson, Deputy Director of Gaza Operations at UNRWA, warned yesterday that the people of Gaza are under tremendous pressure, and it is not known how long they will endure these harsh conditions without food, shelter and water.
He also said, during an interview with the American channel CNN, that “the situation has become very difficult, especially since we are in the winter, and most of the population is living in tents.”
He explained, “Gaza has turned into a city of tents, and its residents are doing their best to live their lives and take care of their children.”
