The former American president won a new Republican primary on Saturday, this time in South Carolina, against Nikky Haley, defeated in her home state.
Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump won on Saturday, in South Carolina, another victory in the race for the Republican nomination after those of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and the US Virgin Islands.
Facing the outgoing president, Nikkey Haley now faces growing pressure to leave the race, but she said Saturday that she would continue her fight despite her defeat in the state where she was governor from 2011 to 2017 at least until the series of March 5 primaries, known as the Super Tuesday.
“I have never seen the Republican Party as united as it is now,” Trump said, taking the stage for his victory speech just moments after the election closed.
The South Carolina primary has always been a reliable bellwether for Republicans. In all but one primary since 1980, the Republican winner in South Carolina has become the party’s nominee. The only exception was Newt Gingrich in 2012.
Nikkey Haley “did some good things,” said Davis Paul, a 36-year-old voter. “But I just don’t think she’s ready to take on a candidate like Trump. I don’t think a lot of people can.”
The former ambassador to the UN does not budge: “I don’t believe Donald Trump can beat Joe Biden,” she declared.
Donald Trump’s political strength nevertheless endures despite 91 criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden, the discovery of classified documents at his Florida residence and allegations that he secretly arranged bribes for an actress porn.
Former president’s first criminal trial set to begin March 25 in New Yorkwhere he faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels during the final weeks of her 2016 presidential campaign.
But without waiting for the results of these primaries, Donald Trump and Joe Biden are already behaving as if they expected to face each other next November.
Next meeting of the Republican primaries, this Tuesday in Michigan.
