United Nations: Gaza residents face the risk of famine News

A report by a United Nations program that monitors levels of hunger in the world said Thursday that all of the 2.2 million residents of the Gaza Strip, who have witnessed brutal Israeli aggression since October 7, will face a high level of acute food insecurity in the next six weeks, and the risk of famine is increasing daily. .

The report of the United Nations-backed Integrated Interim Classification of Food Security (IPC), which classifies hunger levels from 1 to 5, predicted that by February 7, in the “most likely scenario,” “the entire population of the Gaza Strip” would be at the level of hunger. Hunger bordering on “crisis or worse.”

The report revealed that this is the highest ever percentage of people facing high levels of food insecurity that IBC has categorized compared to any region or country.

The report also warned that by February 7, about 50% of Gaza’s population is expected to enter the “emergency” level, which includes rising rates of acute malnutrition and increased deaths.

The report indicated that “at least one in every 4 families,” meaning more than half a million people, will face catastrophic conditions at “level five.”

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has deteriorated rapidly since Israel began its aggression against the Gaza Strip on October 7 with violent and indiscriminate bombing that included large areas of the Strip.

International concern has escalated about the residents of Gaza, who suffer – in addition to the daily bombing – a shortage of food, water and fuel, most hospitals are out of service, and 1.9 million people have fled their homes, villages and cities, according to the United Nations.

United Nations agencies continue to warn of the deep humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, where half of the population suffers from severe or acute hunger, with 90% of them deprived of food for an entire day continuously, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Trucks carrying aid from Egypt delivered some food, water and medicine, but the United Nations says that the amount of food is only 10% of the amount needed by the residents of the Gaza Strip, most of whom have been displaced.
