The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the pattern of Israeli attacks on hospitals in the Gaza Strip constitutes war crimes, raises grave concerns, and reflects a blatant disregard for international humanitarian and human rights law.
The Commission added in a statement that this aggression pushes the health care system in the Gaza Strip to the brink of complete collapse, noting that it documented at least 136 raids on 27 hospitals and 12 other medical facilities.
She added that Israel’s allegations regarding the use of hospitals by Palestinian armed groups are vague and broad, and it provided little information to prove its claims.
The statement stated that the Israeli attacks caused horrific destruction in Kamal Adwan Hospital, and 3 mass graves were later found and more than 80 bodies were recovered.
Holding officials accountable
The United Nations stated that the Israeli government said in response to its report that the Israeli army had taken many measures to mitigate the harm to civilians and reduce obstacles, including providing aid, providing evacuation routes, and establishing field hospitals.
Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement, “As if the continuous bombing and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza were not enough to make the only haven where Palestinians should have felt safe become a death trap.”
Turk stressed “the necessity of conducting independent, comprehensive and transparent investigations into all these incidents, and holding those responsible for all violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law accountable.”
