UN official: Israel will not stop the madness in Rafah unless we intervene to stop it News

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, said that Israel will not stop the madness it is doing in Rafah, south of Gaza, unless the international community intervenes.

Albanese explained in her post on the “X” platform that the news she received from the people besieged in the city of Rafah was “horrific,” saying that Israel intensified its attacks on Rafah after the International Court of Justice ordered it to stop its military action.

The UN rapporteur called for imposing sanctions on Israel, banning the provision of weapons to it, and suspending diplomatic relations with it until it complies with the decision of the International Court of Justice.

The International Court of Justice said that Israel must immediately stop its attack on the city of Rafah, in a decision it issued yesterday, Friday, at the request of South Africa, as part of a comprehensive lawsuit accusing Tel Aviv of committing genocide in the Strip.

The text of the decision – which was read by the president of the court, Lebanese Judge Nawaf Salam – stated that “according to the Genocide Convention, any additional action in Rafah may lead to partial or total destruction.”

The court considered that the ground attack on Rafah – which began on May 7 – is a “dangerous development that increases the suffering of the population,” noting that Israel “did not do enough to ensure the safety and security of the displaced.”

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Palestine has previously stated that the genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinians is reminiscent of the Holocaust.

Albanese called on the international community to take action to stop the Israeli attacks, adding, “I say without hesitation that what is happening in Gaza is not a war, but a genocide, and although Western countries are not comfortable using the word genocide, the genocide in Gaza reminds us of the Holocaust.”
