Ukraine: the country builds underground schools with fallout shelters

In Ukraine, since the start of the war, more than a thousand schools have been destroyed according to UNICEF. Now millions of children are taking their classes online due to constant bombing. Only a quarter of schools can still provide lessons on site.

Daria Redvanska is 11 years old since the Russian invasion, she has been taking classes from home.

When there is a plane alarm, the lesson is suspended and I go down. We’re not allowed to be in the living room because there are too many windows.”

It is both a school and a bomb shelter and will accommodate 400 people: 320 students and their teachers.

The school accepts children from across the region and specializes in arts and computing and caters for gifted children.
