Russian advance in eastern Ukraine

On the morning of Saturday, August 31, the Russian military shelled the Ukrainian city of Chassiv Yar, located in the Donetsk region and on the front line of the clashes. The attack hit a high-rise building and a private house.

The death toll stands at five, according to regional governor Vadym Filashkin. The victims are aged between 24 and 38.

The governor urged civilians remaining in the town – which had a population of about 12,000 before the war – to leave the front line. “Normal life has been impossible in Chasiv Yar for more than two years. Do not become a Russian target. Evacuate.” he said.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have also captured the town of Piynichne, also in Donetsk Oblast.

Further north, in the city of Kharkiv, several neighborhoods were bombed by powerful Russian gliding bombs dropped from aircraft on Friday, August 30. Six people, including a 14-year-old girl, died and 96 people were injured.

Ukrainian authorities said the attack was launched from Russian territory, in the region surrounding the city of Belgorod.

Belgorod, Kyiv’s new target

This town was specifically targeted by strikes by the Ukrainian army. Governor Cyacheslav Gladkov said Saturday morning that 46 civilians had been injured by the bombings, 37 of whom were hospitalized.
