Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid cause blackouts
Repeated Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid in recent weeks have forced the war-ravaged country’s leaders to implement nationwide power cuts. However, in the absence of adequate air defenses to counter attacks and enable repairs, shortages could get even worse with the increase in needs at the end of summer and the bitter cold of winter.
Russian airstrikes against the grid since March have led to the return of power cuts in the capital, Kyiv, who had not known one since the first year of the war. Notably, a powerful barrage in April damaged Kyiv’s largest thermal power plantwhile a massive attack on May 8 targeted electricity production and transmission facilities in several regions.
In total, half of Ukraine’s energy system was damaged, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.
Zelensky: situation in Donetsk region ‘extremely difficult’ but ‘results are tangible’ in Kharkiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday that the situation “remains extremely difficult” in the eastern Donetsk region.
“That’s where most of the fighting takes place.”Mr. Zelensky said in his nightly video address, adding that “the results are tangible” in the Kharkiv region.
Russia launched an offensive in the Kharkiv region late last week, significantly increasing pressure on Ukraine’s outnumbered and outgunned forces, which are awaiting late deliveries of crucial arms and munitions from their Western partners.
Overwhelmed Ukrainian forces are trying to slow down Russia on this new front by using bomb-laden drones to destroy military vehicles.
