Russian strikes on Odessa in southern Ukraine have killed at least 19 people and injured 73 others, according to Ukraine’s prosecutor general.
A first missile hit houses. Then, when rescue teams arrived on the scene, a second missile landed, authorities said. Among those killed were a rescue worker and an emergency services worker.
At least ten houses in Odessa and emergency service equipment were damaged in the attack, which sparked a fire, according to Ukraine’s emergency service and the region’s governor, Oleh Kiper.
The tactic of firing a second missile at the same location, aiming to hit rescuers, is known as a “double tap” in military terms. These strikes often affect civilians.
Mr. Kiper announced that a day of mourning would be held in Odessa on Saturday, the second in less than two weeks.
