Two United Nations officials in Lebanon warned – on Saturday – that there is a “very real” risk that any “miscalculation” on Lebanon’s southern border could lead to a broader conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli occupation army.

The United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and the head of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, Aroldo Lazaro, said that they were “deeply concerned” about the recent developments on Lebanon’s borders.

The two officials said – in a written statement – that “the risk of a miscalculation leading to a sudden and broader conflict is very real.”

The United States and France are working to reach a negotiated settlement that ends the hostilities on the southern border of Lebanon. Hezbollah says it will not cease fire unless the Israeli military attack on Gaza stops.

Last week, the party launched a barrage of missiles and drones, the largest since the exchange of fire with the Israeli army began about 8 months ago, coinciding with the start of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.

Daily bombing

It is noteworthy that Lebanese and Palestinian factions in Lebanon, led by Hezbollah, have been exchanging daily bombings with the Israeli army across the Blue Line, as part of their solidarity with Gaza, resulting in hundreds of casualties, including dead and wounded on both sides. Most of them are on the Lebanese side.
