Writer Turgay Yerli Kaya pointed out in a report published by the Turkish newspaper “Yeni Safak” that Western support for Israel – whether political or military – is “fuel for the continuation of the Israeli machine of crime and slaughter in Gaza.”
Kaya added that some countries sought to impose pressure on Israel to stop its war on Gaza, including Turkey, which cut off all commercial relations with the occupation until the ceasefire was implemented and aid was secured to Gaza.
The writer talked about Turkey’s efforts to use all the cards it has – including strengthening Israel’s diplomatic isolation and calls to take action against it – with the aim of influencing the situation in the region.
important role
He stressed that Turkey plays an important role in launching initiatives in support of Palestine, seeking to contribute to attempts at a peaceful settlement, in addition to its endeavors to influence the international position regarding Israel in global forums such as the United Nations and international courts.
The writer wondered the extent of the impact of such decisions on “the occupying entity that is insanely funded and supported by the West.”
He said that some Western countries, led by the United States, support Israel unconditionally, which strengthens Israel’s strength despite the criticism directed at its policy and the policy of the administration of US President Joe Biden.
He explains that the American threats to the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, in addition to the threat to use the veto at the United Nations, show the effect of American pressure in supporting Israel.
Destructive support
The writer stresses that this American support makes a political solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine more difficult, and obscures hope for any change in American policy towards the Palestinian issue, especially in light of the approaching presidential elections in November.
The report touched on freedom of expression in the United States and how it is considered part of the values of democracy, but when it comes to Israel this freedom seems small and limited, as traditional and digital media are under pressure to reduce critical coverage of Israel and improve its image.
The writer also talked about the United States and some European countries – such as Germany and France – using their national security as an excuse to support Israel’s policies and suppress criticism directed at them.
He explained that this shows that liberal values and human rights are ignored when it comes to defending Israel and its policies, which constitutes a challenge to the principles of democracy and human rights in those countries.
