Turkey: at least twenty-two migrants died after their boat sank


Twenty-two migrants died overnight from Friday to Saturday after their boat sank in the Dardanelles Strait.

A ship carrying migrants from countries in Asia and the Middle East sank in Turkey’s Canakkale province on Friday. The gendarmerie and coast guard launched a search and rescue operation in the area to try to find survivors.

In the early morning, 22 bodies were found, including seven children. They were taken to hospital by ambulance. The total number of people on board is not known.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Department of the Turkish Interior Ministry also joined the operation in coordination with Coast Guard teams.
