The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said that it would be difficult to conclude a trade agreement with Canada after announcing that it would support the Palestinian state, following examples of the United Kingdom and France in the midst of the growing international condemnation of the Israel War against Gaza.
“Wow!” Canada has just announced that it supports the share of the state for Palestine. This will make us very difficult to conclude a trade agreement with them. Oh “Canada !!! Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social Thursday. The office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
Trump’s position occurs a day after Carney announced that Canada planned to recognize the state of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September if certain conditions are met, following recent announcements by France and the United Kingdom.
Canada and the United States are working to negotiate a trade agreement before August 1, the date Trump threatens to impose a 35% rate on all Canadian products not covered by the American-mexico-Canadian trade agreement.
Carney said Wednesday that pricing negotiations with Trump administration had been constructive, but talks may not conclude by the deadline.
Carney said that recognition of the Palestinian state was necessary to preserve the hopes of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a long-standing Canadian objective that was “eroded before our eyes”.
The Prime Minister said that the aggravation of civilians in civilians in Gaza had left “no place for delay in coordinated international action to support peace”.
However, Carney warned the decision by saying that Canada’s intention was “based on the commitment of the Palestinian authority to essential reforms”, referring to the organization led by President Mahmoud Abbas, who has civil authority in certain parts of the West Bank occupied by Israeli.
Carney added that Abbas should “hold general elections in 2026 in which Hamas cannot play any role and demilitarize the Palestinian state”, if Canada should go to the recognition of this state.
Canada after the United Kingdom, France moves
The United States has rejected the measures to recognize a Palestinian state, saying that politics rewards Hamas. The Trump administration was without compromise in its support for Israel, despite the accusations of the United Nations experts and rights groups that the American ally commits a genocide against the Palestinians.
The Israeli army has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians in Gaza and flattened most of the territory since the start of the war in 2023.
The increase in the number of Palestinians who died of famine – now at least 154 people, including 89 children – and the hundreds of people killed on aid distribution sites in the United States and Israelis have raised Israel’s global conviction.
Trump himself said that famine clearly took place in Gaza, despite the Israeli denials. His Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected to arrive in Israel on Thursday for the ceasefire and help talks.
With Wednesday’s announcement, Carney positioned Canada alongside France after President Emmanuel Macron said his country officially recognized a Palestinian state at the same United Nations meeting.
The Israeli Embassy in Ottawa said: “Recognizing a Palestinian state in the absence of responsible government, functional institutions or benevolent leadership, rewards and legitimate monstrous barbarism of Hamas on October 7, 2023”.
The APBAS of the AP welcomed the announcement as a “historic” decision, while France said that countries would work together “to relaunch the perspective of peace in the region”.
Canada’s plan goes further than this week’s announcement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Starmer said the United Kingdom will officially recognize Palestine’s state in September unless Israel takes various “background measures”, including accepting a cease-fire in Gaza.
Carney stressed that Canada was an unshakable member of the Nations Group who hoped that a solution to two states “would be carried out within the framework of a peace process built around a negotiated regulation between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority”.
“Unfortunately, this approach is no longer tenable,” said Carney, citing the “terrorism of Hamas” and the “long -standing violent rejection of the law of Israel”, highlighting its attempt to warn its criticisms of Israel’s actions with the condemnation of Hamas.
The peace process was also eroded by the expansion of Israeli colonies through occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, said Carney.
The Prime Minister said that a two -state solution became more and more distant, with a vote in the Israel Parliament “calling for the annexation of the West Bank”, as well as the “continuous failure” of Israel to prevent a humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
He developed his decision as we aimed to protect the future of Israel.
“All paths to sustainable peace for Israel also requires a viable and stable Palestinian state, and which recognizes the inalienable law of Israel for security and peace,” said Carney.
