US President Donald Trump said that he would raise the customs duties imposed on the goods imported from Canada from 25% to 35% regarding the beginning of next month.
Trump has threatened – in a post on his social communication platform Truth Swishal – to increase the fees to more than this level if Canada has a counter.
The new American drawings come after the 90th day has expired, Trump was granted to various commercial partners from countries to give room to negotiate a trade agreement.
Trump said the countries that did not reach an agreement with Washington with the expiry of the deadline on 9 of this month, on which it will impose fees of 15% or 20% of customs duties.
Canadian reaction
In his reaction, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that his country will defend its work and workers and will continue this approach until the final deadline on the first of August.
He stressed in a post on his account on the X platform that Canada has made vital progress to stop the flow of narcotic fentaline in America, noting that his country is committed to cooperation with the United States in this regard to preserve lives. Washington has always been criticizing Canada and Mexico with the flow of two qantalists across the border.
He added that the federal government, the governments of the Canadian provinces and provinces are making remarkable progress in building the local economy.
Canada is the most prominent commercial partner of the United States and was one of the first target countries with customs duties after Trump took his second term last January, and this appears as follows:
- The volume of exchange for commercial between the two countries last year reached about 760 billion dollars.
- 75% of Canadian exports went in 2024 to the United States with a value of $ 412 billion, the most prominent of which is oil and its derivatives in addition to auto parts.
- On the other hand, Canada from the United States imported goods last year, amounting to about 349 billion dollars, the most important of which is equipment and means of transportation in addition to foodstuffs.
Trump has expanded his commercial war in the past days and set new customs duties on a number of countries, including Japan and South Korea, who are allies of his country, along with customs duties by 50% on copper.
