Washington, DC – The United States MP Marjorie Taylor Greene, a right-wing ally of the American president Donald Trump, suggested that Israel commits a genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, highlighting a growing schism in the republican party.
In an article on social networks this week, Greene condemned the disastrous situation in Gaza, where a hunger crisis imposed by Israeli killed more than 120 people.
She also criticized her colleague Randy Fine, who openly celebrated the famine and the bombing of the Palestinians.
“It is the most truthful thing and the easiest to say that on October 7 in Israel was horrible and that all the hostages must be returned, but the genocide, the humanitarian crisis and the famine that occur in Gaza,” wrote Greene.
His words echo the evaluations of the main defense groups of human rights and the United Nations experts, describing Israel’s actions in Gaza as coherent with the genocide.
The genocide – defined by the United Nations as “acts committed to the intention of destroying, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group” – is considered one of the most serious war crimes.
So far, the Israeli army has killed more than 60,000 people and transformed most of Gaza into rubble.
But only a handful of American legislators accused Israel of genocide, which makes Greene’s comments all the more remarkable.
In the United States, the most vocal legislators against the War of Israel in Gaza largely represented the political left. Greene, however, is one of the most important faces on Trump Make America Great Again (Maga).
However, there was increasing international pressure to denounce the Israeli blockade on Gaza, which limited the entrance to basic supplies to the territory.
In recent days, images of emacities of Palestinian children and evidence of mass hunger in Gaza have sharpened criticism against Israel in American politics.
Last week, the member of the Congress John Garamendi, a democrat, also suggested that Israel’s policies equivalent to the genocide.
“It is impossible to look at the famine caused by the dangerous and deliberate failure of Israel to allow humanitarian aid and not to see a genocide committed against the people of Palestine,” said Garamendi.
The United States provides Israel billions of dollars in military aid, as well as diplomatic support during international forums. The Trump administration nevertheless hesitated to criticize Israel for its atrocities and its blockage in Gaza.
In the midst of this anger, very well – another Trump ally – triggered the indignation last week when he seemed to approve the Famine campaign of Israel to Gaza while rejecting it as a “Muslim terrorist propaganda”.
“Release the hostages,” he wrote in an article on social networks earlier this week. “Until then, start.”
Fine, which was elected at Congress earlier this year with the approval of Trump and the support of the American Public Affairs Committee of Israel (AIPAC), has a history of Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian posts.
For example, in 2021, when a commentator sent the right photo of a dead Palestinian child and asked him how he was sleeping at night, Fine offered a Glib answer: “Good enough, in fact! Thank you for the photo!”
In September of last year, he also seemed to praise the murder of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, an American activist who was killed by the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank.
“Throwing rocks, get pulled. One less #Muslimterror ist. #Fireay,” wrote in an article on social networks at the time.
Earlier in July, the best Democrats in the House of Representatives called Fine “Unleashed, Racist and Islamophobic” on a social media attack against the American Muslim deputy Ilhan Omar.
Fine had responded to Omar’s criticisms of the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington, DC, saying: “I am sure it is difficult to see us welcome the killer of so many of your Muslim terrorist colleagues.”
But recent comments from the Republican Congress on Famine in Gaza seem to have gone too far, even for some of the most faithful supporters of Israel.
The American Jewish Committee (AJC), a pro-Israeli defense group, criticized Fine remarks last week.
“Implies that famine is a legitimate tactic is unacceptable,” AJC wrote in response to the post of Fine.
“Everyone who needs humanitarian aid should receive it quickly and safely. Our leaders must focus less on the notation of political points and more on their work. ”
For her part, Greene warned that “the terrible declaration of fine will actually cause more anti -Semitism”.
