A prominent Tunisian human rights and political activists submitted complaints to the United Nations Human Rights Council and the African Court of Human Rights and Peoples, in protest against what they described as “dangerous authoritarian deviation” in their country.
They also complained about the grave violations of human rights and democracy in Tunisia, especially during the presidential elections that took place on October 6, 2024.
This unprecedented step led by lawyer Ibrahim Balghith, who is accredited to the Tunisian Court of Commentary, the African Court and the International Criminal Court, is coming alongside prominent figures including Kamal Al -Jendoubi, Ahmed Mazul, Reda Al -Daish, Osama Al -Khulaifi, Zina Awlad Saad, Adel Al -Mujri, and Mohiuddin Al -Sharbib.
The complainants assert that their rights as citizens and voters were violated, as well as violating the right of the Tunisian people to decide their destiny, based on this to Judgment No. 17/2021 issued by the African Court of Human Rights and Peoples, which the Tunisian authorities have not committed to implement so far.
The legal move is based on 3 basic demands: challenging the legitimacy of the existing authorities, denouncing the human rights violations accompanying the electoral process, and objection to Tunisia’s withdrawal from the advertisement that allows citizens to file individual complaints before the African Court.
Geneva is expected to host an international press conference organized by the Association for Torture and Committee to respect freedoms and human rights in Tunisia, in order to explain the details of the initiative and highlight its legal and legal dimensions, as well as inviting public opinion and international organizations for solidarity and defending democratic institutions in Tunisia.
The initiative organizers believe that accepting these complaints will constitute a legal precedent that would re -discussion on the legitimacy of the measures that have been taken since July 25, 2021, and may also contribute to pushing the international community to pressure the Tunisian authorities to comply with their legal and democratic obligations.
The human rights figures called on international organizations, the media and all countries to support the Tunisian people in their pursuit of freedom and democracy, and rejected all attempts to impose the fait accompli by force and tyranny.
