Several demonstrations in support of Ukraine took place in different European cities.
In Berlin this weekend, thousands came to show their support for Ukraine. A gathering to mark the second anniversary of a conflict, in which the Russian army appears to be gaining the upper hand.
Some demonstrators do not hide their concern about Moscow’s intentions.
“I think we have not understood what Russian imperialism is and the fact that we are still in an imperial war. Nor the fact that Russia will not stop, even if we negotiate and that a ceasefire does not mean the end of the war. In other words, diplomatic negotiations are of no use, Russia will not stop. And if we make concessions to Russia in Ukraine, it will attack Ukraine again, or it will attack other countries“, explains Krista-Marija Läbe, spokesperson for the NGO Vitsche.
This conflict, which is prolonged, could also have consequences for very young Ukrainians.
“I have two younger nephews, the eldest is 13. And if the war doesn’t end soon, he might have to join the army and fight at some point. For me, it is therefore also a struggle for our identity and our existence“, continues Krista-Marija Läbe.
The German capital also welcomes Russian citizens – who have fled repression in their country. This is particularly the case of Dimitri Androssov, leader of an opposition party.
“I arrived in Germany in May 2022, for the simple reason that I was politically persecuted in Russia. On February 24, I organized and called for a demonstration against Putin’s war of aggression in Ukraine and was arrested“, explains the Russian opponent.
The activist also has fears about this war.
“I firmly believe that until the Russian occupiers are driven out of Ukraine, there will be no end to this war“, he continues.
Far from his country, the politician does not hesitate to make his voice heard and denounce the conflict in Ukraine.
