The American newspaper The Washington Post revealed details related to the course of the pager deal and other details related to Israel’s eavesdropping on Hezbollah.

The newspaper said, citing Israeli and American officials, that the Israeli intelligence service (Mossad) planned to blow up Hezbollah’s pagers in 2022.

It quoted Israeli officials as saying that Hezbollah’s pagers were manufactured in Israel and under the supervision of the Mossad.

She said that the explosives were carefully hidden in the pagers to avoid detection, even if they were dismantled.

In other details, also citing the same officials, the newspaper reported that the pager deal was presented to Hezbollah by a marketing official in 2023.

She pointed out that reading messages on pagers required pressing two buttons, which meant using both hands at the same time.

The “pager” is a small, portable wireless electronic communication device, invented by Canadian engineer Alfred Gross in 1949. It is also called a wireless pager. It can be used to communicate within institutions or within different groups and systems. It operates with rechargeable batteries and receives written messages, communications, and audio and light signals. .

These devices are also difficult to penetrate because they are often not connected to the Internet, and operate using wireless radio wave technology on specific frequencies and with special codes, which is what explains the Lebanese Hezbollah’s use of them to communicate between its members.

Regarding the explosive radios, the newspaper quoted Israeli officials as saying that the Mossad began introducing them into Lebanon in 2015.

She added that the batteries of the radio bombs were large and contained explosives and a communications monitoring system.

It confirmed that the Israelis eavesdropped on Hezbollah’s radio communications for 9 years and reserved the option of turning them into bombs.

On September 17, 2024, Hezbollah announced that hundreds of its fighters and other Lebanese citizens were injured of varying severity after the explosion of the pager devices they were carrying, and accused Israel of being behind these bombings.

These bombings occurred in many areas in Lebanon, including the southern suburb of Beirut and the cities of Bekaa, Nabatieh, Housh, Bint Jbeil, Tyre, Tripoli, Baalbek, and others.
