The university of bombed Gaza becomes a refuge for displaced Palestinians | Gaza News

One of the largest universities in the strip, the Islamic University of Gaza de Gaza City had around 17,000 students before the war, a student, from medicine and chemistry to literature and trade. More than 60% of students were women.

But now, all feeling that the place was once a university.

After 18 months of Israeli bombardment which killed more than 50,000 people in the enclave, the main auditorium is an eviscerated and burned wreck. Giant holes have been exploded through its blackened walls. The shores of the seats are mutilated and twisted.

The campus has become a refuge for hundreds of families in northern Gaza since Israel broke a ceasefire on March 18 and revived the war.

Families have set up tents in conference rooms and classrooms. They take books from the library and burn them in cooking fires because they have no fuel. Children run in gardens reduced to fields of debris and mounds.

A makeshift market has been set up under the arch of the main door.

Their fight to survive got worse because Israel cut the entry of food, fuel, medicines and all other Gaza goods for more than a month, supporting the limited supplies of aid agencies on which the population was based almost.
