The United Kingdom announced on Monday that it would introduce a new carbon tax on carbon-intensive imported goods by 2027, following a similar mechanism planned in the European Union.

This tax will apply to products in the iron, steel, aluminum, fertilizers, hydrogen, ceramics, glass, and cement sectors. The measure will be subject to more in-depth consultation in 2024, in particular to determine the precise list of products concerned.

Currently, businesses in countries that do not impose taxes on large carbon emitters can undercut their UK competitors, a problem the new carbon tax aims to address, according to the UK government.
