The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, denounced the “catalog of endless horrors” which takes place in Gaza after almost two years of conflict, while the civil defense of Gaza reported dozens of new victims of the Israeli strikes.
While the Israeli army is preparing to take control of Gaza City, the nation faces increasing internal and international pressures to stop its offensive on Palestinian territory, where the UN has officially declared a famine.
About two million Palestinians – the vast majority of the population – were moved at least once during the conflict, humanitarian organizations warning against any expansion of military operations.
“Gaza is stacked with rubble, stacked with bodies and stacked examples of what can be serious violations of international law,” guterres told journalists on Thursday, stressing the need for responsibility.
Thursday, massive plumes of smoke rose above Gaza City after Israeli bombings on the outskirts of the city, such as captured in video sequences.
Aya Daher, moved from the Zeitoun district of Gaza City, told the AFP news agency that she had no shelter and “simply awaited the mercy of God” outside a local hospital.
“There were explosions overnight. I was injured, my husband was injured by bursts of shells and my son was also injured in the head. God thank you, we survived, but there were martyrs,” she said.
Cindy McCain, head of the UN World Food Program, warned that Gaza had reached a “breakdown” and called for the urgent catering of its network of 200 food distribution points.
After a visit to the territory, McCain said he had a first -hand witness that “weapon despair”.
The UN officially declared a famine in the Gaza governorate last week, attributing it to “systematic obstruction” of humanitarian aid deliveries by Israel.
