The Serbian Prime Minister, Miloš Vučevićpresented his resignation Tuesday after months of protests following the collapse of a canopy of Novi Sad station in November which killed 15 people.

The resignation of Vučević intervened just a day after the president Aleksandar Vučić said that “Urgent and extended redesign of the government“was underway in response to the claims made by Serbian students who descend into the street to request accounts from the leaders of the country.

At an extraordinary press conference, Mr. Vučević said he was “proud“Of everything that had been done during his mandate, especially in the field of economics.

“”The great tragedy of Novi Sad threw a shadow on Serbia and, from that moment, the country seemed to get bogged down in the crisis“, He said (quoted by the Serbian media), referring to the demonstrations which started after the collapse of the concrete awning above the entrance to the building of the railway station in the city from Novi Sad.

“”(The government) must demonstrate (…) of the highest level of responsibility“He said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Mr. Vučević became Prime Minister of Serbia in May 2024, after being Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Mayor of Novi SAD from 2012 to 2022.

According to Vučević, the division that emerged in society was “Introduced from abroad“, and the collapse of Novi Sad station was used as a pretext. He also said that the mayor of Novi Sad, Milan đurićwill resign, in turn, this Tuesday.

“”We responded to the requests of the demonstrators“said Vacevic, who expressed hope that this will lead to stabilization of the situation in society and the establishment of a dialogue.

Monday, demonstrators blocked a significant crossroads of the Belgrade capital for 24 hours, increasing pressure on the authorities.

Serbian farmers mounted on tractors and thousands of citizens joined this blockade which followed weeks of demonstrations aimed at requesting accounts on the deadly accident of Novi Sad, which criticisms attributed to endemic corruption of the government.

A campaign of massive demonstrations has constituted the greatest challenge for years for the Government of Nationalists of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) which firmly holds power in Serbia.

“”Any form of crisis poses a serious problem for our economy“Said on Monday, Vučić.”Such a situation in society is not good for anyone“.
