Greece wants to play a key role in the reconstruction of Ukraine, Greek Foreign Minister Kostas Fragkogiannis said on Thursday at an international summit in Athens on February 15.

We want Ukraine to be close to Europe and, of course, we want to have a place in the reconstruction of the country. We are present in terms of aid, support from political and economic points of view and we want to participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine’s infrastructure.”

The reconstruction of Ukraine will be one of the most important post-war development projects at the European level.

The European Union and the European Investment Bank have both provided €70 billion in aid for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

The head of the European Investment Bank, Sven Roben, will help finance the repair of damaged infrastructure.

We have very important projects in the transport, rail, transportation and road rehabilitation sector. It’s important for exports, but it’s also important to make sure people can move within the country. Sometimes new roads save lives because people can be evacuated from the front. We also have water supply projects which are very important, because the hydraulic infrastructure has been seriously damaged. Finally, we support small and medium-sized businesses through local banks.”

According to a joint estimate by the World Bank, the European Commission, the United Nations and the Ukrainian government, the cost of reconstruction is expected to reach $411 billion.
