Thousands of demonstrators were dispersed with tear gas by police in the streets of Madrid. The reappointment of Pedro Sanchez as head of the country does not pass.
A new demonstration brought together thousands of people in front of the headquarters of the Spanish Socialist Party in Madrid following the reappointment of Pedro Sanchez as Prime Minister. People wrapped in Spanish flags shouted “No to the coup” and burned Catalan flags. The police had to use tear gas to disperse them.
Protesters accuse Pedro Sanchez of betraying the Constitution and undermining the justice system, due to his promise of amnesty to politicians involved in organizing the referendum on Catalonia’s independence in 2017.
Ana Duchat, demonstrator, was very angry:
“We must take to the streets now. No matter the ideology, everyone must take to the streets and confront the worst president Spain has ever had. Sanchez is a liar. He lied to his voters. Where are the voters of the PSOE? Sánchez did not lie to me because I did not vote for the PSOE and I will never vote for him in my life, but where are the voters of the PSOE? They lied to you blatantly.”
Earlier on Thursday, just as the vote took place, a few hundred demonstrators gathered in front of Parliament.
Their placards could read: “Sanchez, dictator”. If the country’s political blockage passes for a moment, Spanish society remains deeply divided and the socialists continue to play the balancing act.
