The Yisrael Hume newspaper quoted a security source that the embassy employees in Greece were evacuated from their homes, due to popular protests against the Israelis.
The Israeli newspaper reported that the Greek leftist movement plans to a protest movement on August 10, with the slogan “March to Gaza” and quoted a statement by the movement that “the Greek people will not be silent in front of the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza with the support and collusion of the West and the Greek government.”
On Tuesday, the Greek Communist Party condemned statements by the Israeli ambassador, Naoum Katz, in which he expressed his annoyance with a supportive slogans of Palestine written on the walls of the capital Athens.
In a statement, the Greek party criticized Katz’s statements about “security concerns” among Israeli tourists, stressing that they are “shameful” statements.
He added that the ambassador’s statements “are not only due to the fact that it represents a fatal state, but also that the Greek government has become the main defender of the crimes committed against the Palestinian people, on the pretext of the strategic alliance with Israel.”
In turn, Harris Docas, the mayor of Athens, criticized the Israeli ambassador. He wrote – in a post on the X platform – that the city authorities “refuse violence and discrimination in all their forms,” adding “We do not accept lessons in democracy from those who kill civilians.”
He considered that “the discontent is for the (Israeli) ambassador to focus on writings on the walls, most of which were removed at all, at an unprecedented extermination against the Palestinians in Gaza.”
The local newspaper “Kathimirini” had quoted the Israeli ambassador as saying that the municipality of Athens “does not make a sufficient effort to protect the city from organized groups that write anti -Semitic slogans,” adding that “neglecting to clean the streets disturbs Israeli tourists.”
The Greek capital has witnessed continuous demonstrations since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza, organized by activists and stars to denounce the Israeli military shelling and aggression against Gaza, and protests erupted in some Greek islands in protest against the arrival of tourist ships carrying Israelis.
The Greek government finds itself in a critical position between its historical relations with the Arab countries and its growing partnership with Israel in the fields of defense and energy, at a time when about 15 Western countries announced their intention to recognize the Palestinian state.
With American support, since October 7, 2023, Israel has launched a mass extermination war on Gaza, which left more than 211,000 martyrs and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 9,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced people and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
