The problem of the three-state solution: Israel, the West Bank and Gaza | policy

There are people in Israel, and in its government in particular, who want one large state between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, ignoring the repercussions of the demographic situation, while the Oslo Accords stipulated that the West Bank and Gaza are a single territorial unit, ignoring the difficulty of connecting due to the distance between them, and today it appears A proposal for a new solution, which is dividing Palestine into two states.

Haaretz newspaper started from these three possibilities – in an article by real estate developer Dan Darin – to discuss possible solutions to the Palestinian issue, ruling out from the beginning a one-state solution with a population of 15 million people, a little more than half of whom are Arab, because it gives the Palestinians a majority of 51.35%. Considering that this has serious repercussions.

As for the two-state solution, which is widely accepted among supporters of Palestinian self-determination as a means to resolve the conflict, the writer saw that its implementation on the ground is difficult to achieve due to the distance between the West Bank and Gaza, although several solutions have been proposed to overcome this difficulty.

There were several proposals to connect the two regions with a bridge or tunnel, and the idea of building an elevated highway supported by columns with two lanes in each direction was put forward, as well as a railway line, a water pipeline, communications lines, and water supply, but this idea faced two problems, one engineering and the other financial, far away. About the challenge of securing a political agreement.

The highway is supposed to connect Gaza at sea level with parts of the West Bank at an altitude of about 800 meters in a distance not exceeding 40 kilometers, which would cost about two billion dollars, according to today’s prices. The idea of building a tunnel was also proposed, similar to a tunnel. The Channel between France and England, but the cost of that tunnel amounted to about 30 billion dollars.

City state

Because of the repeated wars with Israel, and the widening gap between the levels of social and economic development in the West Bank and Gaza, the writer believes that one of the possible solutions is to divide Palestine into two states, one of which is based on 365 square kilometers, where about two million people now live in inhumane conditions, and the other is based on 365 square kilometers. Between Israel and Jordan.

According to the author, Gaza will become a city-state, like Singapore, a city-state that came into existence in 1965, and has achieved an important position in the global economy despite its small size and population of about 6 million people, with an economy that depends on the production and export of electronics, biotechnology, medicines, and chemicals.

Because Gaza is in a catastrophic situation close to annihilation physically, economically, and socially due to the current war, it is ironic that this same situation makes it possible to revive it, by temporarily removing the population from the ruins, and sending them into exile for a limited period until a modern city is built, according to the wish of some corrupt politicians. .

This new city would solve the plight of Gazans who live in extreme poverty in neighborhoods that lack infrastructure, in the vain hope – according to the writer – that the day will come when they will return to those lands in which they lived 76 years ago.
