The Israeli army announced that it had launched a surprise military operation in the Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, while the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) demanded immediate action from the international community to stop the occupation’s crimes and hold its leaders accountable.
Israeli Radio said that the army launched a military operation in the Shujaiya area, east of Gaza City, the third since the beginning of the war.
The radio added that the army launched the operation in Shujaiya following intelligence information about the return of Al-Qassam militants to work there.
Tel Aviv Tribune’s correspondent said that Israeli vehicles advanced in the Shuja’iya neighborhood amid ground and air bombardment, noting that several martyrs were killed by Israeli military bullets in the vicinity of the Tunisian cemetery, east of this neighborhood.
The spokesman for the Civil Defense in Gaza, Major Mahmoud Basal, confirmed to Tel Aviv Tribune that there were a number of martyrs and wounded in Shujaiya whose crews could not reach them, noting the displacement of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians due to the Israeli bombing. He called on international institutions to intervene to protect civilians, especially children in Shujaiya.
For its part, Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad movement, said that it detonated a high-explosive ground device in an Israeli military excavator east of the Shujaiya neighborhood in Gaza City.
Before that, Tel Aviv Tribune’s correspondent reported that five people were martyred in an Israeli bombing on the Hassanein family’s home on Al-Nazaz Street in the Al-Shuja’iya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, and a number of others were injured as a result of Israeli warplanes bombing a number of homes at the same time.

Hamas denounces
The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) denounced the new military operation launched by the occupation army on Thursday morning in the Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
The movement said, in a statement, that the intensified bombardment on Shuja’iya is a continuation of the war of extermination waged by the occupation government against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, with the full support and coverage of the American administration.
The Hamas statement called on the international community to take immediate action to stop the aggression, and to hold Israel’s leaders accountable for full-fledged war crimes, by repeatedly targeting cities, camps, and neighborhoods.
The movement stressed that these crimes will only increase the Palestinian people’s determination to remain steadfast on their land and challenge the occupation and its plans.
She added, “Our valiant resistance will continue to confront this fascist army and its terrorist machine, and to strengthen its soldiers and officers, until the aggression is broken.”

Israeli newspapers reported that the return of the occupation army to the Shujaiya neighborhood in the Gaza Strip raises questions in Israel.
Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper said that the occupation army had previously announced the dismantling of Hamas’ basic capabilities in the Shujaiya neighborhood, and today it is returning again to the same neighborhood.
While the Israel Today newspaper quoted an Israeli official as saying about the Israeli occupation army’s operation in the Shuja’iya neighborhood, “This is not an unusual operation, but it is part of the phase of invasions that will continue in Gaza wherever Hamas tries to regain its control.”
In turn, the Israeli Broadcasting Authority said that the Israeli army began a ground operation in the Shujaiya neighborhood in the northern Gaza Strip, to dismantle the infrastructure of the Hamas movement, which is still active there, as it claimed.
She added that the ground raid was launched following intelligence information collected by the General Security Service (Shin Bet) and the Intelligence Division of the Israeli Army (Aman), indicating that Hamas had begun to regain control of the neighborhood, she said.
The authority pointed out that this is the third time that the Israeli army has carried out ground operations in Shujaiya, which it left at the beginning of last January.

Al-Shujaiya neighborhood is located in the east of the Gaza Strip, with an area of 14,305 dunums (a dunum equals a thousand square metres), and its population exceeded 110,000 people (2015 statistics).
