The Israeli army said on Friday that the fighting currently taking place in the Jabalia area in the northern Gaza Strip “may be the fiercest” in the region since the start of its ground attack on October 27.
The Israeli army announced at the beginning of January that it had “completed the dismantling of the military structure of the Hamas movement in the northern Gaza Strip,” and was now focusing on the center and south of the Strip. However, violent fighting resumed about a week ago in Jabalia, the most densely populated area in the northern Gaza Strip after the city of Jabalia. Gaza.

Before the war, Jabalia camp was the largest refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, and was crowded with more than 100,000 people crowded into an area of 1.4 square kilometers, according to the United Nations.
Director of Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip, Mahmoud Basal, said, “Since the start of the operation, 150 people among those we were able to reach were martyred in Jabalia.” He added, “We are facing difficulty in reaching the homes that the army targeted due to the heavy shooting at us.” He pointed out that “the Israeli army arrived in the center of Jabalia camp near the market, and the battles are intense.”
Intense fighting also resumed in early May in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in southern Gaza City.
According to Israeli military sources reported by the media, the number of Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip before the war that began on October 7 was approximately 30,000, distributed among 24 battalions.
Israel says that the last four Hamas battalions are deployed in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli army began its military operations there on May 7.

Hamas is skeptical
On Friday, Hamas leader Izzat al-Rishq questioned Israel’s account of its recovery of three bodies of citizens that had been held in the Gaza Strip since last October 7.
Al-Rishq said in a post on Hamas’ account on the Telegram platform, “We confirm our lack of confidence in the occupation’s narrative, and we always say that the final say is what the resistance says.”
He added, “The occupation’s claim – if true – of its access to the bodies of some of its prisoners held by the resistance in Gaza, after 8 months of aggression and genocidal war against our people, is not considered an achievement for its Nazi government, but rather evidence of the weak performance of their terrified army.”
Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said on Friday that the Israeli army was able to recover the bodies of three prisoners who were being held in the Gaza Strip through intelligence cooperation with the Shin Bet.
Hagari added that the bodies belong to Israelis killed during the October 7 attack, and that great efforts are being made to recover the remaining detainees as quickly as possible.
While Israel recovered dozens of its prisoners in Gaza through an exchange deal with the factions that included a temporary humanitarian truce that lasted 7 days and ended in early December 2023, Hamas says that Israel killed 71 of its prisoners in a random air strike on the Strip.
