“In the past few months, I felt this overwhelming guilt, as if I choose my own security to speak. This is the first time I really feel it,” he said.

“I did a few interviews on the camera for the BBC, where I was carrying a Palestinian keffiyeh and I was very frank. But I don’t see myself doing this in the near future.”

He added that he had friends with green cards that were interviewed unexpectedly when he returned to the United States, despite their status as permanent residents.

“After Trump’s re -election, I said to myself:” This time, I’m not going to stay angry and frustrated. I’m just going to give my head and keep moving forward “” he said.

Céline Parreñas Shimizu, the dean of the UCLA theater, cinema and television school, believes that voices like Nguyen can help break the silence that results from these repressions and threats.

“Critical acclamation,” she explained, “allows creativity in response to the forces seeking to silence”.

But she also warned that no praise could fully protect an author from damage to their reputation or lost opportunities.

“Critical or professional acclamation offers no real shield against the fundamental dehumanization of racism,” said byreñas Shimizu.
