The United States and the European Union reached a framework trade agreement on Sunday, which ended a state of ambiguity that was burdened by industries and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic during the past months.
Here are the main items of the agreement:
- Almost all European Union exports to the United States will be subject to 15%basic customs duties, including cars that are now imposed on 27.5%fees, in addition to semiconductors and medicines.
The 15% fees are the maximum and will not be added to any existing fees.
- However, the United States will announce the results of its commercial investigations (item 232) within two weeks and will make a separate decision on customs duties on electronic chips and medicines.
European UNHCR president Ursula von der Line said that any subsequent American decisions regarding these sectors will be “in a different paper.”
- The United States or the European Union will not impose any customs duties on all aircraft, their components, some chemicals, some imitated drugs that do not carry a commercial name, semiconductor equipment, some agricultural products, natural resources and basic raw materials.
Other products will be added later, and for alcoholic drinks, their status has not been determined yet.
- Customs duties on European and aluminum exports will remain at 50%, but von der Line said that these fees will be reduced and will be replaced by the shares system.
- The European Union pledged to buy American LNG for $ 250 billion annually 3 years, with a total value of 750 billion to replace Russian gas. The European Union will also buy nuclear fuel from the United States.
- Under the agreement, the European Union pledged to purchase American military equipment, as well as European companies investing $ 600 billion in the United States during US President Donald Trump’s second term.
