The French President confirmed yesterday that his country was “ready to open” a discussion about the deployment of French aircraft equipped with nuclear “bombs” in other European countries, similar to what the United States is doing to expand its atomic umbrella.
“I will determine the framework very officially in the coming weeks and months,” said Macron – in an interview with the French TV station “TF1”.
In the midst of the Russian attack on Ukraine and the calls of US President Donald Trump to Europe to bear more burdens of its defense, the debate on expanding the scope of French nuclear deterrence to include the rest of the 27 European Union.
It is noteworthy that Russia has the largest nuclear force in the world, about 4 thousand nuclear heads, and sees in the French nuclear deterrence a possible threat to its national security.
