The attack in Tulkarem intervenes while the Israeli raids on the region of Jenin neighboring the occupied West Bank entered the seventh day.
An Israeli air strike killed two Hamas fighters in the city of Tulkarem, said the Palestinian group, stressing Israel’s renewed attention on the busy West Bank since the start of the cease-fire agreement in Gaza.
Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, said that the two men killed on Monday were members of its armed wing.
The Israeli army said that she was targeting a man who was the head of Hamas in Tulkarem, who, according to him, was behind numerous attacks against the Israelis, in addition to another member of Hamas.
Meanwhile, Tulkarem witnesses told the reuters news agency that an Israeli raid was underway in the city.
This operation comes as the Israeli raids in the nearby Jenin region continued in the seventh day.
Supported by armored vehicles and drones, Israeli forces launched a series of attacks on Jenin – a crowded canton north of Tulkarem – January 21 as part of the Israel “Iron Wall” campaign.
Since the start of the operation, at least 16 Palestinians have been killed in Jenin and the surrounding area, according to the Palestinian health authorities.
Mohammad Jarrar, the mayor of Jenin, said on Sunday that some 15,000 people had been forced to flee from the Israeli attacks.
He added that, according to initial estimates, the Israeli army has completely demolished between 30 and 40 houses in Jenin, and hundreds of others were partially damaged.
“The Israeli army is the bulldozer and destroys the streets and infrastructure, creating trails for its vehicles through the rubble of demolished Palestinian houses,” said Jarrar.
Last week, the Israeli army said in a statement that it had led air attacks against “terrorist infrastructure sites” in Jenin, adding that “many explosives planted on the roads” were “dismantled”.
Late Saturday, Israeli forces shot a two-year-old girl in a raid on the village of Ash-Shuhada, just south of Jenin, said Palestinian officials.
“They started shooting us through the windows without any warning,” said Reuters Ghada Asous, grandmother of Laila Muhammad al-Khatib, the little girl.
“Suddenly, the special forces made us a descent and pulled through the windows.”
The Israeli army said that troops on an operation of “fight against terrorism” had shot a structure where the alleged activists had barricaded themselves. He was examining information that unresolved civilians were injured, he said in a statement.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health said that Israeli forces have killed at least 838 Palestinians in the West Bank occupied since the war against Gaza on October 7, 2023.
