Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golub announced on Thursday that his country recognized the State of Palestine, the fourth country to take such a step in two days.
Golub said – in a statement after the government meeting – that it decided to recognize Palestine as an independent, sovereign state on the 1967 borders in accordance with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
The Prime Minister added, “This decision carries only one message, which is our request to stop hostilities (in Gaza) and immediately release the hostages.”
He continued, “This decision is not against the State of Israel or anyone else,” indicating that the government will refer it to Parliament while requesting support from the representatives.
On Tuesday, Spain, Norway and Ireland announced their recognition of the State of Palestine, bringing the number of countries recognizing it to 147 out of 193 countries in the United Nations General Assembly.
