The Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Sunday the death of a child as a result of the cold and lack of heating in the tents of the displaced in the center of the Strip, which has been subjected to genocide for about 15 months, making him the fifth child to die due to the cold in less than a week.
The Palestinian News and Information Agency (Wafa) quoted medical sources as saying that the deceased infant was one month old, noting that his twin’s condition had deteriorated due to the cold in a tent in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.
The sources indicated that “a few days ago, 4 newborn babies, aged between 4 and 21 days, died as a result of low temperatures and extreme cold.”
This is the fifth child, as 4 Palestinian children died in the past days due to extreme cold, and doctors said that they froze to death while they were in the camps for the displaced.
The Gaza Ministry of Health said that Dr. Ahmed Al-Zaharna – who works on the medical staff at the “Gaza European Hospital” in Khan Yunis – was martyred as a result of the extreme cold, and his body was found two days ago inside his tent in the Al-Mawasi area, south of the Strip.
The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, confirmed yesterday, Saturday, that children in Gaza are freezing to death due to the cold and lack of shelter. He explained in a tweet on the X platform that blankets and winter supplies have been stuck for months, waiting for approval to enter Gaza.
