The director of Al -Shifa Medical Complex, Dr. Muhammad Abu Salma, revealed a horrific human tragedy whose chapters are revealed in the corridors of Palestinian hospitals, where the complex recorded 6 deaths within less than 24 hours – including a child – as a result of hunger and malnutrition.
Abu Salmiya described the situation as a crime against humanity, stressing that these lives did not find a single bread to remain alive.
The tragedy circle expands to include the entire Gaza Strip, as the total deaths as a result of famine in one day reached 14 deaths distributed between 6 deaths in the Al -Shifa complex and 8 deaths in the rest of the sector’s hospitals.
These victims range from children and women and those in the princesses of the thirties, all of whom arrived at hospitals 5 days ago in a tragic and catastrophic situation, but the medical teams were unable to provide any service to them.
The human tragedy – according to Abu Salmiya – was embodied in the story of a 5 -year -old child whose mother did not find food or milk, so that breastfeeding milk dried out of its breasts.
The desperate mother was forced to feed her child some herbs that led to serious complications and poisoning, causing the child’s death.
This incident reveals the level of despair that Palestinian mothers have reached in their attempts to preserve the lives of their children.
According to Abu Salmiya statistics, the total number of martyrs of starvation in the Gaza Strip reached 147 martyrs, but he stressed that this number is very small compared to the real reality.
The reason for this is that hundreds are silently dying in their tents and homes without being able to reach hospitals, and therefore their deaths are not officially recorded, which means that the real numbers are more painful than what is announced.
The director of the Al -Shifa Complex criticized the assistance that is promoted to enter the Gaza Strip, describing it as ashes in the eyes and not entered into adequate quantities, explaining that the aid has been limited to small quantities of flour, which despite its importance, it does not address starvation, the lack of vitamins, nor the diseases resulting from malnutrition.
He explained that the problem was exacerbated by the lack of these few quantities to all the needy, as they were seized by some people due to the absence of clear distribution mechanisms.
Extended effects of malnutrition
Abu Salmiya revealed the emergence of a new and painful segment of the victims, who are the wounded who underwent successful surgeries, but they face death due to malnutrition.
These patients who were supposed to stay in the hospital for 5 days are forced to stay a month or more, because their wounds do not heal due to lack of nutrition, their wounds are inflamed and rotted, and some of them lose their life despite the success of the surgery itself.
The infantry milk crisis also represents one of the most dangerous challenges facing the Gaza Strip, as thousands of infants face the risk of certain death, and breastfeeding women have lost the ability to breastfeed due to their poor nutrition, which forces mothers to give their infants water and herbs, which constitutes a real threat to their lives.
Abu Salamia warned that the effects of malnutrition will extend to the future generations, stressing that malnutrition is not a synthetic disease that can be treated within days, but rather needs a long qualification.
He explained that children in the growth stage from one day to 10 years go through the stage of physical, cognitive and mental development, and if there is no good nutrition, they will suffer in the future from kidney, liver and pancreas diseases, in addition to cognitive and mental problems that include types of autism, introverted and learning difficulties.
The United Nations and the humanitarian organizations have recently warned of what it described as “imminent famine”, and now it confirms that the famine has become a reality so that the Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanum Gebrisus, described at the scenes press conference in Gaza, saying, “I do not see a description that is more appropriate for what is happening except that it is collective starvation, which is man -made, and this is very clear.”
At the same time, about 6,000 trucks loaded with food, water and supplies belong to the United Nations at the outskirts of Gaza, and the international organization confirms that Israel prevents the entry of these caravans.
