MEPs accuse Vladimir Putin of being responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny and call for an international investigation.
According to the European Parliament, Vladimir Putin is responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny on February 16.
This is the subject of the resolution adopted Thursday in Strasbourg, with 506 votes for, 9 against and 32 abstentions.
The text is not binding. But its value is highly symbolic for MEPs, who are calling for an independent and transparent international investigation into the death of Alexeï Navalny.
This vote comes the day after the visit of the Russian opponent’s widow to Strasbourg. In front of European deputies, Yula Navalnaïa gave a speech in which she described Vladimir Putin as “the head of a criminal organization”.
The resolution voted by MEPs also calls for an end to impunity in Russia and the release of political prisoners in the country.
Finally, Parliament calls for EU actions to support Russian civil society and political prisoners.
