The agreement was signed in Nouakchott in the presence of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, Ursula Von der Leyen and Pedro Sanchez, whose country is particularly affected by the migration crisis.

In fact, more than 80% of migrants who arrive in the Canary Islands transit through Mauritania, according to the Spanish government.

We are seeing the fall of democratic governments, an increase in terrorist attacks, a rise in refugees and displaced people, and the worsening of an already acute food security crisis“, said Pedro Sanchez.

According to the European agency Frontex, the number of migrants crossing the central Mediterranean will more than double in 2023, compared to the previous year.
