Dennis Hamar, one of the most prominent symbols of a cycling community in South Africa, died tragically after he was attacked during a bike tour, where he was attacked and stolen, resulting in fatal injuries.
Hamar, 76, was on his way from the “Barden Island” area, heading towards “Di Clere Polvard” in the “Forsur” area, when an unknown person pushed him his bike and stole his mobile phone.
Hamar was transferred to a nearby hospital, but he died of severe injuries that included multiple fractures.
The news sparked widespread anger among cyclists and civil society activists, amid calls to enhance security in areas known as the high crime rates.
“We feel very sad to lose another spirit as a result of this repeated pattern of attacks. Despite the police interventions, the problem is still continuing. We appeal to bike passengers to avoid these areas,” said Neil Robinson, CEO of the “Badel Power” bike association.
