The governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdel Qader Al -Huhair, said today, Thursday, that Syria has carried out this week the first direct international banking transfers through the Swift system for international payments since the 14 -year civil war erupted.

The move represents an important achievement in Syria’s efforts to restore integration into the global financial system.

Reuters quoted exclusive as saying that the first commercial transaction was from a Syrian bank to an Italian bank, adding that “the door is open to more.”

The exclusive expected the first transaction with an American bank “within weeks”, a day after a high -level meeting between Syrian and American commercial banks.

The resumption of transactions between Syrian and American banks will be a major achievement in the efforts of the new Syrian officials to reintegrate the country into the global financial system after a 14 -year war.

meeting

On Wednesday, the exclusive conference was held on the Internet, gathering Syrian banks and a number of American banks and American officials, including the Washington envoy to Syria Thomas Barak, with the aim of accelerating the re -linking of the Syrian banking system to the global financial system.

This comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s announcement in May that all the sanctions imposed on Syria will be lifted. This was followed by the issuance of executive orders to officially lift some penalties.

The reintegration of Syria into the global financial system will constitute a major step towards providing the large financial transactions necessary to start reconstruction and economic activity, and to help curb informal, cash -based economic activities.

Formal

The exclusive invited American banks to restore banking relations after the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al -Assad, whose suppression of protests in 2011 led to the imposition of Western countries for one of the most striking sanctions systems in the world.

“We have two clear goals: that American banks establish offices that represent in Syria and the resumption of transactions between Syrian and American banks. I believe that the second goal can happen within weeks.”

Among the banks that were invited to a conference yesterday, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley and City Bank, but those who have already participated in the conference have not yet become clear.
