Air Raid touches a vehicle in Khaldeh, south of the Lebanese capital, while Israel continues its almost per day attacks against Lebanon.
An Israeli drone attack killed at least one person and injured three near the Lebanese capital, Beirut, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, the last violation of the ceasefire between the two countries.
The air raid Thursday hit a vehicle on a lively highway in the Khaldeh region, about 12 km (8 miles) south of Beirut.
The Israeli army said it was targeting “military sites and arms depots” in the region.
Bombing an area near the Lebanese capital marks another escalation from Israel, which has been carrying out an almost daily bombardment in Lebanon since it reached a truce with Hezbollah in November of last year.
The identity of the victims of the attack was not released.
Reporting from Beirut’s outside, Zeina Khodr of Tel Aviv Tribune noted that the Israeli air raid had taken place during rush hour, many people making their way to Beirut in the south of Lebanon.
“Israel also acts with little restraint. The Lebanese state wants these attacks to stop, but the state has little lever. Hezbollah too, if it responds, could trigger hard Israeli reprisals,” Khodr said.
“We do not see a large -scale Israeli bombardment as we saw last year, targeting the areas where Hezbollah has an influence, but we see these attacks occur almost daily.”
Later Thursday, the Israeli army made a wave of air strikes across southern Lebanon, with a heavy bombing targeting the periphery of Zawtar al-Charqiyeh, near Nabatieh, reported the official national agency of Lebanon.
Lebanese officials often condemn these attacks and call the United States and France-the two sponsors of the ceasefire last year-to put Israel to put their violations.
But diplomatic efforts have failed to stem the violations of the ceasefire, in the midst of the reluctance of the United States and its Western allies to take an account.
The repeated Israeli attacks test the position of Hezbollah in Lebanon after having suffered painful blows in his confrontation with Israel last year.
The group combined by Iran began to attack Israeli military positions on the border in October 2023, in what it said to be a “support front” to help the war against Gaza.
For months, the conflict remained widely confined to the border region, but in September of last year, Israel launched a total assault against Lebanon which destroyed large parts of the country, in particular the regions where Hezbollah benefits from support.
The Israeli army has also assassinated the best political and military leaders of the group, notably the head of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah.
A ceasefire was reached in November, in accordance with resolution 1701 of the Security Council, which ended a previous conflict in 2006.
The truce stipulated that Hezbollah should withdraw its forces north of the Litani river, about 30 km (20 miles) from the Israeli border.
But after the entry into force of the truce, Israel continued to occupy certain parts of southern Lebanon in violation of the agreement, and it led attacks across the country.
Weakened by the war, Hezbollah refrained from answering. The Lebanese armed forces did not retaliate against Israel either.
Khaldeh’s latest strike comes in the midst of Lebanese media reports on an American proposal that would see Hezbollah’s disarmament in exchange for the end of Israel’s attacks and a complete withdrawal from the country.
But the secretary general of Hezbollah, Naim Qassem, seemed to reject any agreement to abandon the weapons of the group which would imply Israel.
“We are a group that cannot be led to humiliation. We will not give up our lands. We will not give up arms to the Israeli enemy,” said Qassem. “And we will not agree to be threatened in concessions.”
Qassem had previously warned that the “patience” of Hezbollah by allowing the Lebanese state to treat diplomatic Israeli attacks can run out.
But given the cost of the previous war against the military structure of Hezbollah as well as its civilian base, it is not clear if the group is able to renew the conflict with Israel.
