Moscow has added Kaja Kallas to the list of people wanted for violating Russian law.
The Russian Interior Ministry does not specify for what reasons the Estonian official is wanted.
The Estonian Prime Minister says she is not surprised.
Kaja Kallas, Estonian Prime Minister: “A few years ago my grandmother and mother were deported to Siberia and of course before that there was an arrest warrant. So it’s no surprise that Russia hasn’t changed.”
The policy of dismantling Soviet monuments from the Second World War is at the heart of the difference.
According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Kaja Kallas is guilty of “insulting history” and the memory of Russia.
Kaja Kallas, Estonian Prime Minister: “I suppose it’s because of my work. I was the one who spoke the most about the defense of Europe, about aid to Ukraine, about maintaining the unity of the European Union and NATO allies. I think that’s really not what the Kremlin wants to see.”
Moscow has added several dozen Baltic and Polish officials to its wanted list.
Among them are a former Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Lithuanian Minister of Culture.
