Three people were missing on Saturday following a landslide caused by violent thunderstorms and torrential rain in southeastern Switzerland, authorities said.

A woman was found alive after being buried by the landslide in the Alpine Misox valley in Graubünden. A rescue operation for the three other people is underway.

Elsewhere in Switzerland, the popular tourist destination of Zermatt, in the southern canton of Valais, near the iconic Matterhorn mountain, remains inaccessible. Heavy rains and melting snow caused the Mattervispa River to overflow, isolating the village.

Spectacular videos showed the small river running through Zermatt in flood, partially submerging the streets of the popular ski resort.

The Matterhorn-Gotthard railway has suspended operations as no other means of transport are available, the railway company announced on social media on Saturday morning.

The emergency services of the canton of Valais were on alert facing the level of the Rhône on Saturday.

Authorities advised residents to avoid low areas of their homes, including cellars, to stay away from swollen rivers and not to park on bridges. It was also advised against filming or photographing the floods for safety reasons.
